SDC Focal Point for Rural Development
This platform was created by SDC's thematic divisions to share knowledge, to develop common visions, to debate issues, to confront theoretical knowledge with field reality. It is a means to effectively managing knowledge, learning and joint work around rural development across sectors, thematic specialisations, and globally dispersed programmes and partner organisations.
Value Chains in Rural Development (VCRD)
VCRD is a Community of Practice aiming at gaining insights on how value chain approaches can contribute to pro-poor rural economic development and to identify concrete good practices or principles for socially, economically and ecologically sustainable interventions along value chains, and for dealing with key issues in value chain approaches (e.g. division of tasks between private and public players; how to choose the right value chain and the right point(s) of intervention).
Skills Development in Rural Areas (SDRA)
SDRA is a Community of Practice with the aim of developing guidelines and key issues around the specifics of skill development in rural Areas through internet discussions and face-to-face workshops.
The Neuchatel Initiative is an informal group of representatives of the major bilateral and multilateral development agencies involved in agricultural development. It focuses on agricultural and rural (extension) services and knowledge systems, with the purpose of exchanging experiences and views, joint reflection, and development of a common understanding on current issues. Its slim website provides access to commonly developed publications and provides links to the persons and institutions engaged in the group.
Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services (GFRAS)
GFRAS’ mission is to provide a space for advocacy and leadership on pluralistic, demand-driven rural advisory services. GFRAS does this in the context of the global development agenda, with a goal of promoting sustainable growth and reducing poverty. GFRAS is active in supporting experience-sharing in rural advisory services (RAS); consulting regional actors, assessing their needs and exploring potential collaboration; providing voice for RAS in global processes and events; producing reports and briefs on RAS; supporting and harmonizing better evaluation and assessment of RAS; and supporting capacity development for regional RAS bodies.
Resources on Agricultural Services for PLOW (Professional Development for Livelihoods Advisers)
PLOW supports the professional development of Livelihoods Advisers at DFID. It provides the basic know-how, current thinking and complementary readings on a range of topics that are important for enhancing livelihoods. AGRIDEA has acted as theme editor for the section on agricultural services.
Smallholder Irrigation Market Initiative Network
Many technologies with high potential for poverty reduction never become widely spread. The reason is not the technologies and their use, but the need for complementary interventions of a range of players with different competencies, and the competence and experience needed to facilitate market creation and supply chain development processes. The SIMI (Smallholder Irrigation Market Initiative) network wants to disseminate know-how, approaches, tools and materials that enable the spread of promising way out of poverty through a market creation approach.
This internet service supports groups of local learners around the world to share both their expertise and their challenges in a virtual knowledge exchange. Learners produce ideas for progress through the synergy created by many diverse groups pooling their 'do-ledge', or capacity to do things, together. Apart from the SDRA and VCRD discussion that are hosted by the LLL platform, there are learning groups working on demand-driven agricultural services and on developing market chains from producers to consumers
